It all started when two friends Roger Gordon ( Drummer) and Ryan Ramdin (Guitarist),
graduated from high school and could finally pursue their dreams of playing in a rock
band. They hooked up with Roger Deygoo (Vocalist) who just left his former band
LIB/PTS and was thinking of putting together a band of their own. The guys then asked
Kurt Kerrett, a friend of theirs, to take on the bass guitar duties. The only problem was
the guys could not play their instruments properly so they began to practice in earnest.
The Flotsam and Jetsam that finally became Brutus was floating around socializing,
listening to music, learning to play their instruments for about a year before they actually
came together and give birth to Brutus on the 6th of September 1998. So without any
experience or musical knowledge, four friends got together learnt a few cords and...
Brutus was born.

The band decided to name itself Brutus because the word, describes their heavy stripped-
down style but the history significance of the word was another reason why they chose
the name. Brutus made its live debut on December 20th, 1998, playing as a supporting
act to PTS (Pearls to Swine) the only other ROCK/METAL band that existed on a
"Green" Guyana rock scene. The band played a few more gigs that took them into early
1999 then decided to spend the remainder of '99 rehearsing and composing songs.
By early 2000, Brutus was the lone metal band on the local scene but not without changes,
a fifth member Mike Lagan had joined the outfit and he took over the bass duties from
Kurt who promptly switched to guitar, is real love. The band continued to rock
Georgetown with their live performance.

On April 2000, the band recorded its first demo album, "Poisoned",which composed of
seven songs. After a year the local scene grown appreciably. Brutus ended the year at a
National Street Fair called "Main Street Lime" but destiny had other plans and more
changes were to follow. Ryan was asked to step down for lack of interest; Mike Lagan
disappeared after a while and was replaced by Trevor, a friend of the band, while
Paul Bonar, former PTS member and leader of Tech XXI, offered to perform second
guitar duties. Brutus played a few more gigs but soon they were with out a bassist and
a second guitarist. Soon Rory was drafted in, who saw the guys played at Main Street
Lime. despite the fact that Rory had never played the instrument before, he learnt all
the Brutus songs in a short time. He made his debut at Subway on August 25th, 2001.
It was evident that Brutus had found their permanent bass man.

Brutus remained as a foursome overcoming all adversity and played in Berbice,
West Coast Demerara and Side Walk Cafe and Jazz Club. On November 30th, 2002,
the band recorded their first ever live performance at Side Walk called, "Trippin' at the
side". this recording paved the way for the first ever video for the band. The video
called "Insanity". On February 27th, 2004, "Trippin' at the side" was finally released.
