One down and three more to go says Roger 'Young Bill Rogers' Hinds as he copped the 2012 National Health Song Competition Saturday last in Mackenzie. His second winning of the that National Aids Programme Secretariat competition in three years. His winning composition this years was a song titled ' Health is important.'
On Saturday his competitive nature will be in full force again as one of 18 taking aim at the Carib Soca Monarch in the semi Finals at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. If he makes the cut he will be in the finals ' Behind a Band' at the National park on February 18. Bring out your rags and flags because I'm gonna create a mash fever inferno that's very infectious like the flu," he encourages all to come out to enjoy the nation's most major festival that unites all peoples.
As if that's not enough this Sales Clerk at the Payless Variety store is also sticking to his 20 years and running tradition of contesting the National Seniors Calypso Monarch title starting February 11 against 18 others including Tennecia Defreitas the current Junior Calypso Monarch. If he makes the cut he will be in the finals carded for February 17.
"For those two competitions I'm excited because this is my first shot at the Soca Monarch and my 20th shot at the Calypso monarch..." the father of two said. in his competitive cap he has the Calypso Monarch 2008 as well as the 2009 HIV and Aids Song Competition feathers in his cap hence, he is by no means fearful of clashing and is very optimistic that he can bring it for the two competitions.
Having represented Guyana at Two CARIFESTAs (2006 in TT and 2008 in Guyana ) the HIV/ Aids advocate who's hit 'Put it on' is still in major rotation on radio and part of the national war against Aids Campaigns, he's also contesting for the Road march title as well. For the Calypso competition this year he's targeting the 'Soup drinkers,' a song that tell the story of which party has the best soup, political or otherwise... pun intended in social commentary style. As a cultural Ambassador Rogers has represented Guyana amongst a Caribbean group of entertainers for six years. That Caribbean Vision group toured seven Caribbean Islands engaging in Edu-Culture (Education and Culture combined) via drama and music. The group's head was Kurt Allen the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago Calypso Monarch.
